Messaging that Works for People, Not Platforms
This week at NewDayOne, we unveiled something new with Base app:
A live integration of XMTP messaging inside the all new Base app, combining:
AI + money + secure group chats—all in one interface.
Finally, we can own and control our messaging the way we own & control our money.
Today at NewDayOne, @baseapp + XMTP unlock a new surface for builders:
AI + Money + Secure group chats
It’s time to build agents & mini-apps that work for people, not platforms.
Coinbase Wallet is now much more than a wallet. Your new home to create, earn, trade, discover apps, and chat with friends all in one place.
What does that unlock?
- Agents can send and receive messages, and hold and move funds.
- Group chats that can pool capital, vote, and act.
- Conversations where AI assists, executes, and coordinates.
These aren’t features bolted onto messaging. They’re new primitives—the starting point for apps that feel more like co-pilots than chat threads.
And because it’s XMTP:
- You control your identity and consent.
- Messages are e2ee and quantum-resistance
- No one—not even Base or XMTP—can read or intercept them
It’s time to build agents & mini-apps that work for people, not platforms.

A $21M Series B to Advance XMTP's Mission

Our mission for XMTP has never been more important.
- Make XMTP the secure, decentralized messaging layer for the world
- Support any identity across wallets, apps, and ecosystems
- Help developers build the next generation of messaging-native apps
The upcoming era of AI, digital money, and quantum computing will require a new standard for secure and interoperable communication. XMTP is a protocol for the future of messaging — open, decentralized, and quantum-resistant. Just as SMTP laid the foundation for email at the dawn of the web, XMTP is built to do the same for this new era.

We’re not trying to compete with Signal, Telegram, or Discord.
We’re building something they can’t:
Messaging that’s composable. Encrypted. Owned by no one.
A network you can build on—not just use.

Fred Wilson has joined the board of XMTP Labs

We’re also proud to share that Fred Wilson has joined the board of XMTP Labs, the team behind XMTP.
Fred’s early support of Ethereum, Coinbase, and protocol infrastructure speaks for itself. He’s been a consistent voice for open networks, and his conviction in messaging as core infrastructure aligns perfectly with our mission.
We invested in XMTP because messaging is one of the most critical primitives on the internet and we believe it needs a reboot for a world of AI and agents. Today, messaging is controlled by a handful of large companies and is completely siloed. XMTP is rebuilding it from first principles: secure, decentralized, identity-native, and open for developers. It’s the protocol layer for the next generation of messaging applications.
With Fred on board, and new capital behind us, we’re pushing ahead—with even more urgency.
